What do you need to know when buying a new boat?

Did you know that well over two-thirds of the Earth is covered with water? That's right - 71 per cent of the planet is blue with the wet stuff, and it'd be a shame not to see as much of it as you can in your very own boat. Whether you enjoy a spot of fishing, recreational diving or simply want to explore the oceans that surround us, owning a boat offers you that special freedom that few others have.

However, buying a boat isn't quite the same as purchasing a car, but there are still certain similarities that you'll need to consider. In this article, we're going to take a look at just what you should think about when purchasing a new vessel - read on to find out more!

Revert to type

The first thing that you'll have to consider is the type of boat that best suits your requirements, and at Hunts Marine, we've got plenty to choose from. Initially, you'll need to consider just what you plan on using your boat for. Maybe you want something that allows you to serenely cruise the shorelines of Australia, or are on the lookout for something specially designed for fishing. Hi-octane watersports are also a popular pastime in Australia, and there are vessels that are suited perfectly to these activities.

The first thing that you'll have to think about is the type of boat that best suits your requirements.

It's true that there are several 'all-rounder' boats in our showrooms which are appropriate for a broad range of uses, and others which are best utilised for their specific purpose. Once you have figured out what you're mainly going to use your new boat for, have a chat with one of our experienced staff who will happily talk you through the ins and outs of each option.

Size matters

Of course, the type of boat that you choose indirectly correlates with how large (or small!) it will be. It goes without saying that the larger your new boat is, the more features and amenities it is likely to have. At Hunts Marine, the majority of our vessels are designed for transporting on a trailer, so you won't find anything of Titanic proportions in our showrooms (this is a good thing!). Even so, larger boats have the capacity to include such things as toilets, cooking facilities and the like, something that their smaller counterparts may not.

If this is your first time buying a boat, you'll doubtless be very excited about your impending purchase, but it's still important that your new-found passion begins as easy as possible. Therefore, it's probably best that you start small or at least medium-size, depending upon your budget and boating experience. Hence, perhaps begin with something around 4-5 metres in length that will allow you to learn the basics of boating without going in at the deep end - you can always move on to a bigger model once you've gained adequate experience of life on the waves!

Out with the old... or in with the used?

At Hunts Marine, we have a huge range of both new and used boats for you to choose from, giving you yet another decision to make in the boat-buying process. Of course, buying a shiny new boat means that you'll be heading out onto the water with that wonderful 'fresh out of the box' feeling that's hard to replicate, and in a machine that you know will give you complete reliability and performance right from the beginning.

That's not to say, however, that our used boats are bound to cause you a bundle of trouble - far from it. We'll never sell a used boat that's likely to sink at its first sight of water - each of our used vessels undergo several rigorous checks. We'll inspect the motor (which is also given a 12-month service), cylinders, gearbox oil and the steering systems, as well as the condition of the boat itself - hull, fittings and accessories.
